truck accidentThe truck accident that killed comedian James McNair, left comedian Tracy Morgan in critical condition, and injured two others made headlines over the weekend. The truck driver has since been charged with vehicular homicide and assault by auto in the Saturday morning crash on the New Jersey Turnpike. He has been released on $50,000 bail.

It is reported that the truck driver had been driving for 24 consecutive hours when he failed to take notice of slow-moving traffic ahead of him, hitting the limo van in which Morgan, McNair and others were riding. The driver tried to swerve to avoid the limo van but struck it from behind, causing it to rotate and overturn. The crash created a chain-reaction with four other vehicles, but no other injuries were reported.

Morgan suffered from broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken leg and a broken femur from the truck accident. He underwent surgery on his leg, is showing signs of improvement and is becoming more responsive.

Approximately 500,000 truck accidents occur every year in the United States. As a result, there is an average of 130,000 injuries and 5,000 fatalities. Several factors can contribute to a truck accident include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Excessive speed
  • Under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Hazardous road conditions from bad weather or construction
  • Being cut off by other drivers on the road

With so many cars on the road it is important to always be alert, drive safely, share the road, and be mindful of your surroundings; no matter if you are driving a car or a tractor-trailer.
