Did the high costs at the pump keep you from heading out this holiday weekend? Gas prices continue to reach record breaking levels and have had a significant impact on people’s wallets and travel patterns.

Our friend, Fran McDavitt at RE/MAX, has shared some great tips to help lessen the impact of high gas costs on your finances and “ease pain at the pump”:

  • Don’t Tailgate – keep space between your car and the car in front of you and avoid aggressive driving, this can increase your gas mileage by 33% on the highway and 5% around town
  • Don’t Speed – high speeds consumes up to 25% more fuel
  • Lighten the Load – remove any unnecessary items (i.e. bike and luggage racks) as they can reduce gas mileage by 2-5%
  • Keep Tires Inflated – underinflated tires can increase gas consumption by 3%
  • Don’t Idle – idling can cost up to half a gallon of gas per hour
  • Avoid Rush Hour, Consolidate Trips and Carpool – improve your fuel economy by 5-10%
