summertime drivingSummertime driving has officially begun, and with that are several safety tips to keep in mind when taking to the road. This past weekend alone has seen numerous car accidents involving pedestrians, trains, and other vehicles in the Boston area. Despite being voted #1 for pedestrian safety in the Nation, there is growing concern over the number of tragedies taking place in the Boston area.

As you get behind the wheel of a vehicle this summer, there are several things to consider:

  • Always check your tires, fluid levels, wipers, and lights before getting on the road.
  • Have water and snacks available in the car in the event of an emergency or breakdown.
  • Cars can easily overheat in the summer, especially if stuck in traffic, so be sure the cooling system is functioning properly.
  • Be sure children are properly secured in car seats and that they wear seat belts at all times.
  • NEVER leave children or pets alone in the car. Temperatures can become deadly after just 10 minutes of being in a vehicle.
  • School is out so always look behind you when backing out of a driveway and slow down if you see a runaway ball in the road-there is sure to be a child following behind.
  • Never drink and drive. Arrange for a designated driver or use public transportation.
  • The nice weather brings out more pedestrians and bicyclists. Always share the road and stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Highways become extremely congested during the summer months with many people taking to the road to travel. Stay alert and be mindful of your surroundings.
  • Construction is always going on throughout the warmer months, so be aware of lane changes, merges, uneven pavement, and crews working on the road.

Summertime driving can be stressful at times due to the amount of traffic, but it shouldn’t be fatal. Please use caution when taking to the road this summer and always stay alert for your own safety as well as for others on the road.
